00400 1. Someone (I forget who) has proposed to produce methane from
00500 manure. According to him, each ton of manure produces from
00600 50 to 70 m↑3 methane. I calculate that 60 m↑3 is 2117 ft↑3,
00700 and this is 90 lbs of methane, and about 20,000 BTU/lb can
00800 be obtained. The 2x10↑9 tons of manure (according to some
00900 eco-source concerned with the disposal problem) would correspond
01000 to about 9x10↑6 tons of methane which would be about equivalent
01100 to the same tonnage of coal which is about 1/6 of U.S. production.
01200 Therefore, it would seem to be a worthwhile source.

01400 2. A second proposed source of methane is coal. The bureau
01500 of mines calculate that there is about as much methane imbedded in
01600 coal as there is in the known natural gas reserves associated with
01700 oil. T?ey spent $680,000 on a pilot plant that produces enough
01800 gas to heat 1000 homes but say that it should be cheaper now that
01900 they know how. A.P. 30 Jan.
